Research Title

Facilitating Knowledge Management Initiatives for Improved Competitiveness in Small and Medium Enterprises in Construction

Background of the research study

From an organisational perspective, Knowledge Management (KM) can be viewed as the process by which knowledge is identified, created (acquired/ captured), codified, stored, disseminated (shared/ transferred), implemented (adapting, transforming, synthesis) and measured for the benefit of an organisation. It is a broad, multi-dimensional and integrative concept that is at the heart of organisational activities. Knowledge management encompasses people, culture, technology, strategy and organisational structure dimensions, to mention but a few. The last two decades have seen increasing attention being levelled at the importance of KM in large organisations (> 250 employees), with very little being directed at Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). There are also very little empirical construction-related studies that have given attention to KM in SMEs, despite the fact that over 90% of construction organisations are SMEs. Hence, the thrust of the study focuses on KM for SMEs in the construction industry. The study was carried out in two stages namely the pilot and main study. The pilot study objectives are as stated. This was later modified and geared towards knowledge capture reflecting on the outcomes of pilot study.

Research Objectives

  • Investigate the main challenges associated with implementing KM initiatives in SMEs.
  • Investigate the efficacy of different technologies and techniques for KM in SMEs.
  • Develop and validate an Information Technology (IT) based framework for the most required KM process.
  • Examine and document the nature of training provisions that will be of benefit to SMEs with their KM initiatives.
  • Explore the extent to which KM contributes to competitiveness in SMEs (real and perceived).

Research Methods

The research intends to address the social, cultural, behavioural and technological issues associated with knowledge management in construction SMEs. This calls for a robust research methodology made up of a combination of tried and tested research approaches, which include inter alia:
  • A thorough review of the relevant literature on the characteristics of SMEs, as well as on KM and related areas (in general and in the construction industry).
  • The use of interviews (e.g. semi-structured)
  • The use of grounded theory
  • Collating and analysing appropriate data sets
  • Developing, testing and validating appropriate framework(s)

Benefits/Expected Outcomes of the Research

  • Develop and test a prototype IT based framework for required KM sub process in SMEs.
  • Develop and test requisite training materials to support KM improvements in SMEs
